Merrick is a Partner in the Projects group.
Merrick has an expert understanding of the global energy industry and a history of success in the sector. His practice is focussed on global oil, gas, LNG, refinancing, petrochemical and power project development. He advises on all aspects of energy development projects and transactions, from the granting of upstream concession agreements to the acquisition and disposal of energy assets.
His experience extends to renewable power development and includes geothermal, wind, solar, hydro, waste to power, battery storage, hydrogen and ammonia projects and carbon capture. As a chartered chemical engineer, Merrick has spent over 28 years in Asia – including seven in Jakarta – successfully developing major infrastructure projects across the region as well as in the Middle East and Africa.
He is ranked Band 1 in both Chambers & Partners’ Global and Asia-Pacific guides for Energy & Natural Resources and is also noted for his work in Indonesia and in the oil and gas sector.
- Advised Conrad on all aspects of their development of the Mako gas field in the Natuna Sea, including the sale of gas to Singapore and Batam, the development of offshore facilities, securing gas transportation rights through third party infrastructure, the conversion of a conventional PSC to a gross split PSC and the farm-down of PSC interests.
- Advised Mozambique LNG on all aspects of its long term LNG marketing to buyers in Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, China, India and Europe.
- Advised Keppel on its acquisition of an interest in the Golar Gimi FLNG project, the Charter of the Golar Gimi to BP and the project financing of the vessel.
- Advised Lanxess on all aspects of its greenfield Butyl Rubber plant in Singapore.
- Advised PLN Persero, Indonesia’s state owned power company, on the Tolo, Sdirap and Tanah Laut Wind Farm developments; the IKN Nusantara 50 MW solar development and the islands’ de-dieselification solar projects; multiple geothermal development projects; the export of renewable energy to Singapore; and the development of greenfield, renewable powered and hydrogen projects.
- Advised Hess on gas sales arrangements, field unitisations and other project development agreements for Block A-18 in the Thai-Malaysia Joint Development Area.
- Advised Premier Oil on drilling rig charters and multi-party rig sharing agreements for Indonesia and Vietnam.
- Advised Rubicon on its long term charters of FPSOs to oil fields in Australia, Thailand and the Philippines.
- Advised Pearl Oil on all aspects of the Jasmine Oil field development in Thailand, including the acquisition of the Jasmine Field Concession, the FPSO charter, the facilities development and the oil sales.
- Advised Pertamina on its long term purchase of LNG from Woodside.
- Advised Singapore LNG (SLNG) on its LNG regasification agreement and terminal arrangements.
- Advised multiple LNG sellers and buyers on Price Review and offtake disputes in relation to long term LNG SPAs.
- Advised OMV on its investment in and development of a greenfield PDH plant in India.
- Advised ADNOC on the development of a greenfield petrochemicals plant in the United Arab Emirates.
- Advised a Global Trader on its acquisition of a refinery and retail business in Malaysia.
- Advised Energy Equity Sengkang on the gas sales and project financing of the Sengkang power plant.
- Advised SunGreen H2 on its proprietary hydrogen production technology and its deployment to multiple customers in Asia, Australia, Europe and America.
- Advised TransEra Energy on the development of CCUS projects in Indonesia.
